This is the third time I’ve tried to write this post now but my Mac keeps freezing on me. Not good when there’s a deadline next week. But back onto topic…
I’ve just watched the Turner Prize 2013 awards from Monday and have to admit I’m not a fan of the winning piece by Laure Prouvost. I don’t really get the idea behind it. I personally think that David Shrigley should have won for his piece; “a show at the South Bank’s Hayward Gallery, installed a comic naked male model in Derry, who occasionally pees into a bucket, and encouraged visitors to draw it as if at a life class.”
I also thought that the bookies favourite to win Lynette Yiadom-Boakye oil paintings of imaginary figures where amazing. Made me want to pick up a paintbrush again.
For me the highlight of the show was watching the footage of the public’s reactions to the pieces. I find it interesting watching how people react, especially to art as it is a very personal reaction. I think the best footage though was of the little boys thoughts of the paintings with his Dad as they’re simple and straight to the point. Children don’t over think about the meanings behind art, they just look at it and form an opinion.
I can’t actually find a video of just the reactions but here is the link to the whole thing. The footage showing the public starts at 18:47.
